US Merchant Marines

The motto of the US Merchant Marines is “Deeds Not Words.”

These torah covers were commissioned by the Jewish Alumni group of the US Merchant Marine Academy in Sands Point, NY. The academy has a chapel with two torahs.

One torah cover’s design memorializes the 142 US Merchant Marines who died in WWII, 8 of whom were Jewish. The design incorporates some of the US Merchant Marines’ banner symbols, along with zachor and their motto in Latin.

The larger torah has their motto in Hebrew, along with some iconic images of the tools of their profession.

This was the first time I was hired and paid by the US government!
